What Makes a Great Business Card?

A traditional marketing tool, a business card is an essential part of every business’ branding kit. It needs to convey your business’ image, give important contact information, is attractive and captures the attention of new customers or clients. Let’s look at the key things every business card needs.

The Standard Size of a Business Card

The standard size business card is 90x55mm, though other sizes are possible. Keep in mind, however, that different sizes from the norm can make it harder for your business card recipients to hold onto your details. Odd sizes may mean the cards won't fit into business card cases and A4 presentation folders with pre-cut tabs for the business card (like the one below).

6 Key Things Every Business Card Needs

While it can be tempting to add every little bit of information on the card, it is important to keep in mind best design principles and these six things:

  1. Your brand’s logo – your logo is the visual representation of your business. It’s what people recognise and instantly associate your business with.
  2. Your brand’s colours and fonts – it is important to be consistent in your branding, presenting a ‘united front’ between any other brand assets you have.
  3. Essential information – besides your name and phone number, what other text does your business card need? Email address, job title and website URL are all important details someone could use to contact you.
  4. One sided or two sided – should you use both sides of the business card, or is that overkill? Many businesses are choosing to use one side for their logo, and the other for contact details, avoiding a blank side should the card be left upside down. Instead of a blank side, you can print some thin lines for jotting notes or appointment details.
  5. Graphics – should you need additional graphics such as your photograph or pictures that represent your business? This is a personal choice but used well it can be helpful.
  6. Positioning – here’s where your graphic designer’s skills come into play. They’ll know where to position each aspect of your design, and how large each pieces needs to be in comparison with each other.

A bonus tip of what NOT to include: Don't try to put too much onto your business card. Just the essential details. Like with all graphic design, white space remains important to avoid overcrowding. If there's too much, it gets overwhelming and will lose effectiveness.
